In "Monadology, XXXVI, 'Chopin': 12 Études", composer Bernhard Lang transforms Chopin's famous Études Op. 10 into a radical 'meta-composition'. The Austrian composer dissects the original scores and reconstructs them as new sound structures. This piece is part of Lang's monumental 'Monadology' series (more than forty compositions, 2007–2020), in which existing music, ranging from Chopin to Mozart and Ligeti, is deconstructed and rewritten as self-reflective musical texts.
The final three Études are dedicated to Daan Vandewalle, whose virtuosity and refined insight into contemporary music bring this complex cycle to life. His performance reveals the intriguing tension between tradition and innovation that results from Lang's fascination with repetition, fragmentation and musical memory. The outcome is an intriguing dialogue between Chopin's romantic world and the musical language of the 21st century.
