Daan Vandewalle
Daan Vandewalle is an internationally acclaimed pianist, mainly known for his interpretations of 20th- and 21st-century piano music. He has performed in concert halls all over the world such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Mozarteum, Théâtre des Châtelets, Paris, Auditorio Nacional, Madrid, and many more.
He has worked extensively with Frederic Rzewski and Alvin Curran (first recording of the epic piano cycle Inner Cities). With Alvin Curran, he now performs in a duo called Era Ora. Other notable collaborations include singers such as Salome Kammer and Nicholas Isherwood, rock band Sonic Youth; Fred Frith; Chris Cutler; David Moss; Han Bennink; pianist Geoffrey Madge; and many composers such as Christian Wolff and Clarence Barlowe. His discography started in 1996 with his debut recording dedicated to the Concord Sonata by Charles Ives, which received rave reviews. Other recordings include Gordon Mumma’s complete piano works; Rzewski’s The People United Will Never Be Defeated; Sorabji’s five-hour Opus Clavicembalisticum; the Skalkottas Third Piano Concerto (conducted by Johannes Kalitzke); and the premiere recording of Alvin Curran’s piano marathon Inner Cities. All these recordings were met with critical acclaim, mostly being labelled as setting a new standard for these works.
Vandewalle premiered several piano pieces by his lifelong friend Frederic Rzewski, such as Songs of Insurrection, the piano concerto A Dog’s Life (with Peter Rundel and the Asko Schönberg Ensemble), and many more. In 2025, he will release the entire 10-hour piano cycle The Road by Frederic Rzewski, as well as his Nanosonatas—both being premiere recordings of the complete works.
