Leoš Janáček
(1854-1928)
Czechia
Leoš Janáček was a prominent Czech composer and a leading figure in 20th-century musical nationalism. His unique style was deeply rooted in the inflections of his native speech and the melodic characteristics of Moravian folk music, often drawing comparisons to the work of Mussorgsky. Throughout his career, Janáček directed the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and founded a college of organists in Brno. His body of work includes significant operas such as Jenůfa, The Cunning Little Vixen and The Makropulos Case, all noted for their dramatic intensity. He also composed influential choral pieces, including the Glagolitic Mass, and instrumental works that utilized repetitive melodies and bold harmonies. His later compositions occasionally reflected the influence of French Impressionism, yet he maintained a highly individual and original voice until his death.
