Johan Duijck
(°1954)
Contemporary, Belgium
Johan Duijck is a Belgian composer, pianist and choral conductor whose music focuses primarily on piano and choral repertoire. His compositional language combines strongly melodic and often lyrical writing with a highly contrapuntal approach, drawing on techniques such as canon, fugue, inversion and stretto. His music can be described as a combination of free atonality and an extended sense of tonality, generally avoiding harsh dissonances in favour of a fluid and organic sound. He places great importance on clear and balanced formal structures, frequently using symmetrical forms and the recurrence and variation of themes and motifs. In his choral works, he pays particular attention to the relationship between text and music, using musical material to reflect the content and atmosphere of the text.
