Hildegard von Bingen
(c.1098-1179)
Medieval
Hildegard of Bingen (c. 1098–1179) was a German Benedictine abbess and composer whose sacred music reveals the visionary intensity of the High Middle Ages. She wrote more surviving chants than any other medieval composer, including hymns, antiphons, and the liturgical drama Ordo Virtutum, combining soaring melodic lines with profound theological imagery. Hildegard’s music, preserved in manuscripts such as the Rupertsberg Codex and the Symphonia armoniae celestium revelationum, continues to be performed and recorded widely, bringing her unique voice and spiritual vision to modern audiences.
