Enrique Granados
(1867-1916)
Spain
Enrique Granados was a prominent Spanish pianist and composer who became a leading figure in the movement toward nationalism in late 19th-century Spanish music. After studying in Barcelona and Paris, he gained acclaim for his Danzas españolas and his piano compositions, which were characterized by a fluent, Romantic style blended with the Spanish-Catalan folk traditions. His most celebrated works, the Goyescas, were inspired by the art of Francisco de Goya and later adapted into an opera that premiered in New York City in 1916. Returning home from this performance, Granados drowned when his ship was torpedoed by a German submarine. Granados also contributed to music education by founding his own piano school.
