Ástor Piazzolla

(1921-1992)

20th Century, Argentina

Astor Piazzolla was a renowned Argentine composer and virtuoso of the bandoneón. He is best known for revolutionizing traditional tango by integrating elements of jazz and classical music. After studying in Paris under Nadia Boulanger, who encouraged his experimental approach, Piazzolla faced initial resistance from traditionalists in Argentina, however, his innovative use of counterpoint, complex rhythms and unique instrumentation, most notably through his group Quinteto Nuevo Tango, gained significant acclaim in the United States and Europe. Over his career, he composed approximately 750 works, including pieces for electric guitar, double bass, and string quartet, eventually influencing a new generation of composers and cementing his legacy as a major 20th-century musical figure.
