As part of a radio exchange project, Ward Weis was asked to write a piece lasting 24 minutes and 1 minute. That one, final minute was to serve as a ‘transition zone’ for the contributions of two other composers, Cathie Boyd and Eric La Casa.
George De Decker was given carte blanche for this assignment, and that was a problem. He needed a hook, something that would stimulate him to hang his story on. So, as he had done before with painting, theater, or literature, he sought inspiration in something that intrigued him as an art lover. That something was Won Kar Wai's film 2046, from which he adopted the 12-part chapter structure: 2401 (2008) became a composition in twelve parts, each lasting two minutes.
De Decker and his own ensemble, iNtertidal, retreated to a castle for a weekend to make recordings.
iNtertidal was formed with the five musicians with whom he most enjoys to work with.
