Sir Edward Elgar
(1857–1934)
20th Century, United Kingdom
Sir Edward Elgar was a prominent English composer whose work in the late 19th-century romanticism style helped spark a renaissance in English music. Largely self-taught, Elgar’s style is defined by bold melodies, striking colour effects and a mastery of large-scale forms. While his earlier works often displayed a hearty, self-assured quality, he also demonstrated deep introspection. In masterpieces like The Dream of Gerontius, he utilized continuous musical textures inspired by Richard Wagner. Conversely, his Cello Concerto in E Minor reflects a more restrained, sombre tone, capturing the sorrow of World War I. Elgar was the first English composer of international stature since Henry Purcell, and his legacy remains central to the 20th-century English musical tradition.
