Rudolf Matz

(1901-1988)

Croatia, 20th Century

Rudolf Matz (1901–1988, Zagreb) was a central figure in Zagreb’s musical life as a composer, cellist, and conductor. His six-volume First Years of the Cello (1948–1962) is widely regarded as one of the most important cello pedagogical works since Duport’s Essai sur le doigté du violoncelle (1806). Among his hundreds of compositions, the Cello Quartet in D minor (1966) stands out for its subtle engagement with themes from earlier masters.
