Luciano Berio
(1925-2003)
20th Century, Italy
Luciano Berio (1925–2003) was an Italian composer whose work spans experimental, orchestral, vocal, and electronic music. Trained at the Milan Conservatory and later active in Darmstadt and the United States, he became known for pioneering electroacoustic works at the Studio di fonologia in Milan, co-founded with Bruno Maderna. His music often integrates literature, spoken text, and extended instrumental techniques, most notably in the Sequenza series and Sinfonia (1968–69). Active as both teacher and conductor, he held positions at Juilliard, IRCAM in Paris, and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, while continuing to shape postwar music through works that combined experimentation with expressive immediacy.
