Lodewijk Mortelmans

(1868-1952)

Romantic, 20th Century, Belgium

Lodewijk Mortelmans was a Belgian composer, conductor and music educator who played an important role in the transition from Romanticism to Impressionism in Flemish music. He studied at the music school in Antwerp and the Brussels Conservatory. In 1893, he won the prestigious Prix de Rome with his cantata Lady Macbeth, setting it on a Flemish text. He subsequently taught counterpoint and fugue at the Antwerp Conservatory and became its director in 1924. Although he composed orchestral works and an opera, Kinderen der Zee, he became particularly renowned for his songs and piano miniatures. His songs, many on poetry by Guido Gezelle, are distinguished by their expressive melodies and close integration of text and music, earning him the title “Prince of the Flemish Lied”.
