Henri Duparc

(1848-1933)

France

Henri Duparc was a French composer primarily celebrated for his innovative songs. He transformed the traditional French song into a scena, an opera-like scene characterized by a symphonic approach to form and a deep sensitivity to poetic prosody. His work includes songs set to the poetry of Théophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire and others, as well as orchestral pieces. Around 1890, Duparc’s creative output was severely hindered by self-doubt. In a period of intense self-criticism, he destroyed nearly all of his subsequent work and manuscripts. Consequently, his body of work remains relatively small.
