Gustave Huberti

(1843-1910)

Belgium, Romantic

Gustave Huberti (1843–1910) was a Flemish composer, conductor, and pedagogue, closely associated with Peter Benoit’s Flemish school. Winner of the Prix de Rome in 1865, he composed oratorios, choral works, songs, symphonic pieces, piano music, and children’s works. His notable compositions include the oratorios Een laatste zonnestraal and Kinderlust en leed, the symphonic poems Bloemardinne and De dood van Willem van Oranje, and a Treursymfonie. Admiring Wagner, Berlioz, and Schumann, Huberti sought to unite Romantic expressivity with a distinct Flemish musical voice, leaving a rich but underexplored legacy.
