Franz Anton Hoffmeister

(1754-1812)

Classical period, Germany, Austria

Franz Anton Hoffmeister was a German composer and music publisher who became a prominent figure in Vienna’s musical life during the Classical period. Originally arriving in Vienna to study law, he soon turned to music and established himself as a prolific composer, writing symphonies, operas, concertos and chamber music, with a particular focus on the flute. His works combine expressive melodies with clear formal structures and practical instrumental writing, reflecting both the refined style of the period and the needs of amateur musicians. He also played an important role in music publishing, issuing works by composers such as Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. In 1800, he co-founded the Bureau de Musique in Leipzig, a publishing house that later became C. F. Peters.
