Erik Satie
(1866-1925)
France
Erik Satie was an influential French composer known for his spare, witty, and highly unique musical style. He played a pivotal role in breaking away from 19th-century French romanticism, often aligning his work with Dada and surrealist movements. Satie’s aesthetic sought to strip music of pretentiousness, favouring the bare essence. His compositions range from pioneering harmonic piano pieces like the Trois Gymnopédies to the experimental ballet Parade, which incorporated unconventional sounds like typewriters and sirens. Despite being dismissed by some contemporaries as a charlatan, he was deeply admired by figures such as Debussy and Ravel. His work remains a cornerstone of 20th-century music history.
