Arthur Meulemans
(1884-1966)
Belgium, 20th Century
Arthur Meulemans was a Belgian composer, conductor and music educator whose extensive output includes symphonies, concertos, operas, choral works and chamber music. He studied at the Lemmens Institute in Mechelen under Edgar Tinel, who became an important influence on his musical development. After teaching at the institute, he settled in Limburg, where he founded the Limburg Organ and Singing School in Hasselt in 1916 and helped develop the region’s musical life. In 1930, he became conductor of the radio orchestra of the Catholic Flemish Broadcasting Service in Brussels. His musical language combined a strong Flemish inspiration with influences from French Impressionism, particularly Debussy and Ravel. Over the course of his career, his initially lyrical style became more angular and experimental, reflecting his engagement with contemporary musical developments while retaining a connection to tradition.
