Aram Khachaturian

(1903-1978)

Russia, 20th Century

Aram Khachaturian was a prominent Soviet Armenian composer celebrated for blending Western classical techniques with the folk traditions of Armenia, Georgia and other regions. He is best known for his Piano Concerto (1936) and the ballet Gayane (1942), which features the iconic "Sabre Dance." His career was marked by significant political challenges; in 1948, he was accused of "bourgeois tendencies" by the Soviet Communist Party, though he was later rehabilitated and honoured as a People’s Artist of the Soviet Union in 1954. Beyond his major symphonies and concertos, he composed the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic national anthem, film scores and the ballet Spartacus (1953). His work remains a vital contribution to 20th-century music, reflecting both his cultural heritage and his complex relationship with the Soviet state.
