André Laporte

(°1931)

Contemporary, Belgium

André Laporte is a Belgian composer whose music combines modernist techniques with a distinctive expressive and narrative approach. Born in Oplinter, near Tienen, he studied at the Lemmens Institute in Mechelen and pursued musicology and philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven. His participation in the Darmstadt summer courses and the courses for new music in Cologne during the 1960s brought him into contact with leading figures of the post-war avant-garde, such as Boulez and Stockhausen. Laporte developed an eclectic musical language in which counterpoint, atonality, sound fields and quotations serve dramatic expression and musical symbolism. His works include the oratorio La vita non è sogno, which won the Prix Italia in 1976, and the opera Das Schloss, based on Franz Kafka’s novel. Alongside composing, he played an important role in Belgian musical life at the BRT, as an educator and advocate for contemporary music.
