Alessandro Scarlatti
(1660-1725)
Baroque, Italy
Alessandro Scarlatti was a highly influential Italian composer of the Baroque era, primarily celebrated for his extensive contributions to opera and vocal music. Based largely in Rome and Naples, he was a central figure in the development of the opera seria. He is also credited with formalizing the Italian overture (the opera overture in three sections, allegro-adagio-allegro), which served as a significant precursor to the classical symphony. Beyond his operatic work, he was a prolific composer of chamber cantatas and religious music, and his mastery of thematic development and chromatic harmony anticipated the styles of later composers such as Mozart and Schubert. His innovations in orchestral writing, particularly his increased emphasis on accompaniment and the strategic use of wind instruments, helped shape the evolution of the 18th-century orchestra.
