Aleksandr Glazunov
(1865 -1936)
Russia
Aleksandr Glazunov was a prominent Russian composer who emerged as the primary successor to Pyotr Tchaikovsky in the symphonic tradition. A student of Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov initially aligned with the nationalist school of Russian music while also incorporating influences from Liszt and Wagner. His most prolific period occurred during the 1890s, yielding celebrated works such as his fourth, fifth and sixth symphonies, as well as the ballets Raymonda and Les Saisons. Beyond his compositions, he served as the director of the St. Petersburg conservatory starting in 1905. Following the 1917 Revolution, Glazunov remained in the Soviet Union until 1928, eventually settling in Paris for his final years of life.
